I’m looking forward to the second book!

1. Would you like to tell us a little bit about yourself and your book Atonement?

I think people would be surprised to learn that I am an accountant by trade and profession. I have managed Accounting Departments for private companies for over fifteen years. I have had a passion for writing my entire life and always blew it off as a hobby and nothing more. When I dreamt of the idea for Atonement, I finally decided to see if I could sit down and complete a manuscript. Here I am with my first completed book many, many years later. I come from a large Irish Catholic family in Boston, MA USA, and the themes in the book are rooted in that upbringing.

2. I know your family are a big influence on the characters of Atonement, how did they react when you told them about naming characters after them?

Most people don’t realize that the nine siblings are named after my real life nieces and nephews. I wrote the first draft of Atonement so many years ago that my nieces were in college then, now some of them have children of their own. At the time, they thought it was great fun, but I don’t know that they believed it would ever make it to publication. I think what they enjoy most is all the powers and fighting skills I gave them, especially the women.

3. What was your favourite scene to write?

There is a scene where one of the sisters, Kelly O’Mara, meets Death in the Vatican library. The setting is beautiful, the sarcasm is rampant, and the chess game between them is pure fun. That was not in the original manuscript, nor the outline, it just came to me as I was writing and those are always the most fun to see in the final work.

4. You are an inspiration on Twitter, how do you find the energy and motivation?

I don’t know about inspiration, but I appreciate the kind words. I try to pay forward whatever has been given to me. I wish I had found the Twitter community before I finished/published the book. It’s hard to keep up the energy of writing and having a support structure can make all the difference. I am just one voice in that amazing group, and I am happy to help whenever and wherever I can.

5. What aspect of writing a book do you find the most difficult?

My books have a lot of action in them, sort of like the Thriller/Suspense genre. I usually tell people my book is a Supernatural Thriller. I find the fight sequences especially draining. They take more energy and more editing than anything else I write. I am always comparing them to great action sequences in movies & tv, like Constantine, John Wick, Daredevil or the Punisher, some of my favorites.

6. Where is your favorite place to write?

I wrote the original draft of Atonement in a public library near where I used to live. It was an old building, with floor to ceiling windows, a wrap-around green space with a flower garden, and a separate space for children so they could make all the noise they wanted without disrupting anyone. I loved that space! Since moving away, and now with lockdown from COVID, I tend to write in a home office, it has great natural light and I hung up some artwork for additional inspiration.

7. How has social media influenced/affected your writing?

I think social media has helped me build a brand and a level of legitimacy that I would not have been able to get on my own. Networking with people, supporting one another, and reviewing books is a great way to keep your name out there and get better by seeing others succeed.

8. If you could change one thing about the process of writing your first book, what would it be?

I made so many mistakes with my first book because I didn’t go to school for writing and I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t know any writers at the time, and there was almost too much advice on the web, it was information overload. In many ways I am still learning, but I don’t know that I would change anything. I think the book was completed when it was meant to be finished. I think that making all those mistakes made me better. It was painful, but we learn our greatest lessons when we get it wrong and keep at it.

You can find J.L.
