Author Q&A Sophy Layzell

Sophy is the author of several books, Invisible Thread which is a contemporary fiction novel with a paranormal element and the Complete Trilogy of which only one, Measure of Days is published so far. The next in the instalment Upon All Men will be released March 2022 by the Book Guild. Invisible Thread is currently in hard back with paperback and ebook due to be released 1^st December 2021. 

Sophy loves the beautiful flowers her husband grows in the garden, silly conversations with her daughter and the walks her dogs take her on. 

1. Where’s your favourite place to write?

I prefer to write outside or at least with a view of the garden, I find it very calming. 

2. What’s your favourite genre to read?

Because I blog about the books I read, I’ve been approached by all sorts of writers that I probably wouldn’t have discovered otherwise. If left to my own devices, I tend to stick to historical fiction, but in the past year or so I’ve enjoyed fantasy, thrillers … all sorts!

3. How do you choose your book’s title(s)?

Book titles, like synopsises and blurbs are incredibly painful to put together. Some people just have the knack for them, but I struggle and often seek other people’s advice. Having said that, the titles for the Complete trilogy kind of just appeared. Probably because they are quotes from the bible and all have a similar meaning behind them.

4. Would you want your book made into a film?

I think this is something most authors fantasise about and actually it’s one of the things we could have a degree of control over if we pitched it ourselves. Having said that, I haven’t even tried to write a script for mine. It’s a different skill, and while I can write scripts for theatre I wouldn’t know where to start for film.

Finally, what’s the best piece of advice someone has given you about writing, marketing, or just generally about life?

 I read once that we are not likely to have any lasting impact on the world. We are insignificant in the grand scheme of things and I found that incredibly liberating.
