My favourite books of 2021

As part of the writing community, I get to read lots of books from relatively unknown authors. Let me tell you, this is such a pleasure and an honour. These days I find it difficult to pick up a traditionally published book after exploring the treasures in the world of self-publishing. From now until New Year’s Eve, I’m going to showcase my favourites. If your book is not on here, it doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it. It’s been a very difficult decision choosing these books! They’re also not in any particular order.

The Garden of Stone Houses by Anya Pavelle

This book is like nothing you’ve ever read before. With elements of history, paranormal and fantasy, it will have you unable to put it down. The story follows Selene as she tries to discover the truth behind her father’s death and free her mother. With the help of the spirits, Selene seeks answers.

My Review

I don’t know where to start with this review other than tell you how amazing this book it! The Garden of Stone Houses follows Selene as she discovers the truth about her mother and father. As she learns about her family’s slave background, Selene realises that her special abilities serve a purpose. With the help of the spirits, she seeks justice.

I love how Anya has combined the stark realities of slavery with the magical world. The world building is simply amazing and you’re immediately swept away to New Orleans. Having read Moon Hunters by Anya Pavelle I already knew that her world building was sublime but this book has only wowed me even further. I cannot wait to read Anya’s future stories.

The Moon Hunters

I don’t know where to begin to tell you how amazing this story is. It’s like nothing I have ever read before.

The story begins with Leilani Ani and her husband being rescued from a shipwreck. As Leilani recovers, she begins to tell Deanne (the doctor who rescued them) what has happened to them. We learn about the island that they have fled and the ill-treatment that Leilani has suffered.

The story is modern, yet old-fashioned. Rich, descriptive language is used throughout, creating beautiful scenes and further pulling you into the story.

A brilliant read that had me wanting to discover more and immerse myself in the beautiful world that the author had created.
