Author Q&A with Brenda Lyne
Brenda Lyne is the pseudonym of author Jennifer DeVries. Jennifer lives just outside Minneapolis, Minnesota with her two busy kids, two cats, two fish, and probably a partridge in a pear tree. She is living, breathing proof that it is never too late to follow your dreams.
How did you begin your journey as a writer?
I‘ve always known I wanted to write novels…it just took me a long time to find the discipline to actually do it. The catalyst came in 2018, when I was asked to write up a development plan for my job. I really struggled with that, because I felt like the expectation was to strive to become middle management at that large corporation. And quite frankly, that wasn’t what I wanted. I knew what I REALLY wanted, and realized it was time to make it happen. I took a short story class to dust off the cobwebs, and I haven’t stopped writing since!
Do you write in the same genre that you read?
Yes. I read horror, thriller, mystery, crime fiction — and you’ll see all of that in my stories. Stephen King is my hero.
Do you have a writing schedule?
As a single mom of two teenagers with a career, it can be hard to carve out the time to write. I’m generally an early riser and find I do my best writing in the mornings with a cup of coffee in hand. Ultimately, though, I grab time wherever I can, and have been known to bring my laptop and write in the car while a kid is at practice.
What are you writing at the moment?
I’m in the beginning stages of writing novel #4, which is the second book in a new series featuring a new character — Raegan O’Rourke, an investigative journalist with a psychic ability, a complicated family life, and a newfound talent for solving cold cases.
