Author Q&A with Elise Kenny

I live in London. I have two young kids and I love to travel, watch films and try new foods!

Tells us about your writing/ published book(s)

Double Blank

Where’s your favourite place to write?

In bed with the covers around me

How do you approach starting a new book?

The main drive for me comes from when I get into the characters and start to love them so I write until I start connecting

What’s your favourite genre to read?

I love poetry, thrillers, speculative books

Have you always wanted to write?

Yes, it’s always been a release for me and my happy place

What do you do when you have writer’s block?

Try something different, try not to stress, and read

Tell us about a scene that you loved but had to edit out of your book

I had a scene in Double Blank at the start to build the character but it ends up running a bit long so I had to remove it. I’ve tried to scatter parts of it back in though.

Do you like reading the same books you write?

I like speculative books, so yes

Do write under a pen name? If so, tell us about how you chose it

It’s an old family name. The other name was a potential name for my kids – but I only had boys in the end!

How do you choose your book’s title(s)?

I wait for it to hit me over the head

What advice would you give to someone wanting to write their first book?

Write, write and write some more. Then ask for some feedback and write again

Do you do research for your books? If so, what kind of research?

Yes, for this one I researched things about policing, chemical reactions, fire fighters and equality!

How do you fit writing into your everyday life?

It’s a struggle but if I don’t write, I start to malfunction! Ha ha

How do you approach ‘world building’?

I try not to add in too much. I research more than I end up including

How do you handle criticism?

I ignore it, unless there’s constructive bits in there. Not everyone will like your books!

Describe your perfect character to me

One I can relate to and can’t stop thinking about. One I will remember months or years from now

Tell me about your current work

I’m writing a sequel to my romance novel but also dabbling in 2 other novels – one thriller and one speculative thriller

Tell me about your main character

Jorah is someone who says they have no hope but he definitely does. His hope is what can kill him or help him survive. He has to fight to be who he really is

Would you want your book made into a film?

Yes, sure!

How many books do you own?

More than I probably should
