Author Q&A with Lisa Henry

Tells us about your writing/ published book(s)

My debut, Shea’s Saviour was born in late March 2020. My husband suggested I write something considering I’m always reading. The idea for my second book, Heading Home, just came from nowhere I believe, I just started writing and it ended with nearly 95k words. My youngest son, Dwayne, came to me with an idea for a book he wanted to write, he thought he was too young to write one but I told him otherwise. We then compiled The Life Of Lea, a story of acceptance and difference written for the younger generation. I’m currently finishing my new supernatural/paranormal story.

Where’s your favourite place to write?

In my bedroom with my music on my headphones, or just in the background.

How do you approach starting a new book?

I think for me, it just comes from nowhere. Sometimes I pick up a pen and a notebook and, all of a sudden, I’ve started a new book.

What’s your favourite genre to read?

I guess that would probably be thriller.

Have you always wanted to write?

I cant say I have, I never thought Id be any good. It was something new to try and, well, here I am.

What do you do when you have writer’s block?

Dance. Just dance in the kitchen, with the kids, alone, sometimes with the cat, which he hates.

Tell us about a scene that you loved but had to edit out of your book

I guess it would be my first book. I wanted Shea to maybe have a love interest with Kyron but she had other plans. He had a wife and she had to fix someone.

Do you like reading the same books you write?

Absolutely. I actually read my own sci-fi book back the other day and still cried the same way I did when I wrote it.

Do write under a pen name? If so, tell us about how you chose it

Nope, sometimes I think I should add the ‘M’ from the second part of my hyphenated name but then think why should I?

How do you choose your book’s title(s)?

They just appear. Sometimes I have a working title, sometimes that title sticks.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to write their first book?

Just go with what feel right. Don’t feel that it has to be perfect the first time.

Do you do research for your books? If so, what kind of research?

Sometimes, especially if it has to do with real life situations.

How do you fit writing into your everyday life?

I tend to write during the evening. When the kids are settled and dinner is done.

How do you approach ‘world building’?

I seem to play a movie in my head whilst Im writing. It just seems to play out and I type what I see.

How do you handle criticism?

I listen and take it in. If I can use it to my advantage then I will.

Describe your perfect character to me

Perfect character? Is there one? I guess I’d say someone who is strong minded, knows what they are worth and doesn’t take any crap.

Tell me about your current work

Im currently working on Missing. A story about a 14 year old girl who can talk to the dead. It’s nearly finished and I’m hoping for a Halloween release.

Tell me about your main character

Luna is 14. She can talk to the dead. She initally helps them connect with their living loved ones, but there is someone who wants to use her gift for evil.

Would you want your book made into a film?

I think the sci-fi book, Heading Home would make a great film, but I’m biased.
