Author Spotlight with Simon Warwick Beresford

Like most of the authors that you’ll find on these Author Spotlights, I met Simon through Twitter and have had the pleasure of reading FASCINATE. A book filled with twisted and depraved poetry.

Utterly twisted and depraved but brilliant. The second poem in the book is named Epidemic and was a bit of an eerie read given the current situation of the world. Nevertheless I really enjoyed it. There were a number of poems that I really enjoyed and the rhythms were perfect for the eerie and twisted tones. A particular favourite of mine was ‘The House’, the scene setting was chilling. There’s certainly a few poems that will leave you questioning what you have just read and yet at the same time you’ll be marvelling at the author’s ability to weave such twisted and depraved events into such beautiful poetry.

1. Would you like to tell us a little bit about yourself and your books?

Hi, I’m Simon Warwick Beresford. I’m currently a Care Team Leader (day job) & Poet.

My available (on Amazon) books are ‘FASCINATE Twisted Poems For The Depraved’, ‘My Little Black Distress’, ‘Extinction Imminent’ and ‘Ghost City’. I mostly but not exclusively, write Horror Poems.

2. When did you first discover your love for poetry?

I read a lot of Dr. Seuss as a young child. Then I wrote my first poem at the age of 11. It was for School. We had to write one about Harvest Festival. The Teacher chose to read mine out and my class seemed to like it. One girl nearly wet herself with laughter and it was s’posed to be a funny poem, so that was a good start. I enjoyed the positive attention, so decided I wanted to be a Poet and kept writing. I’ve had other ambitions but this one stuck.

3. What is it about dark poetry that draws you to it?

Well I like Horror (films and books), the adrenaline rush without any actual danger I guess. As for writing it, I like to be impactful, I like to leave an impression. There’s enough dull poems about flowers and shit. I wanted to do something different. Something cool.

4. What one of your books is your favourite, and why? (If you can choose!)

It’s between FASCINATE and My Little Black Distress.

FASCINATE is the best of 20 years work. It contains poems from when I was 17 to when I was 37. It’s sold 46 copies so far and has a star rating of 4.8 out of 5 after 7 reviews.

My Little Black Distress on the other hand, took just two years but I was writing like never before nor since, during that time. It’s my largest (Little like Little John) and most expensive book, which I guess is why it has only sold 11 copies so far. Still its current rating is 4.4 out of 5. I’d also say it’s my darkest book. Though they all get really dark at times. The ones I’ve wrote thus far.

5. What aspect of writing do you find the most difficult?

Does Marketing count as an aspect of writing? Otherwise I guess switching from dialogue to action. Once two of my characters are talking, they don’t shut up!

6. Where’s your favourite place to write?

In front of a laptop but I sometimes get my best ideas whilst walking.

7. How has social media influenced/ affected your writing?

I think having a DeviantArt got me writing more again because it gave me a new audience. This was before I published any books. However I have recently become disillusioned with that site and thus no longer recommend it. The Twitter #WritingCommunity has recently helped me sell a few books but I think all it does to my writing, is distract me from it!
