I am Asanti East, an up and coming African American writer who is starting in her long-awaited writing career. I have been writing recreationally for about 6 years. I enjoy taking the time to craft and bring to life a good story, it is therapeutic for me. I am a married mother of 4 wonderful children (3 girls and 1 little boy). When I’m not writing I enjoy reading the works of other authors, my favorite genres are romance and crime.
1. Do you write under a pen name? If so tell us about how you chose it.
Yes I do. Asanti East is a combination of my thoughts and my husbands thoughts honestly. I’ve always loved the name Asanti for some reason, it sounds mysterious and sexy. When I suggested I wanted to write under a pen name I asked my husband what the last name should be, he looked off into space and just said East, Asanti East. I giggled like a little girl and screamed I LOVE IT!!
2. Tell us about your writing/published book (s)
Well, my very first book is being published and released soon. It’s called Royal Choices and the release date is November 4th! It’s a steamy romance about a small town everyday girl who meet a rela life Prince! They fall in love in a whirlwind romance but fate and the universe doesn’t seem to want them together. Plots to overthrow the crown, kidnappings, attacks. This book will have you on the edge of your seat from page one!
3. How do you approach starting a new book?
I start with the characters, I give them names, backstories, physical features the whole deal. Then I make a plot revolving around my characters. If it’s a romance my whole plot is around my two main characters falling and staying in love no matter what I throw at them. If it’s anything else (most likely crime/thriller) the plot revolves around my character getting the vengeance or satisfaction they so desperately seek.
4. What advice woud you give to someone wanting to write their first book?
JUST DO IT! Start off with a blank page and let your imagination run free. It’s not a quick overnight process, it’s a labor of love! It may not make sese at first but that’s what editing is for. Let you mind run free with your first draft. Most of all, HAVE FUN!
5. How do you ft writing into your everyday life?
Wow umm well I fit it in where I can. I have the best support from my husband. We have 4 kids together so of course sometimes writing takes a back seat to being mommy, wife, and my full-time job. But those late nights and early mornings I can’t sleep I’m definitely writing!
6. How many books do you own?
Let’s see between my e-book library and my physical library it has to be over a hundred. And yes I have read them all!
