Author Q&A with Pamela Crouch

Pamela Crouch is a self-published author who resides in the beautiful Virginia countryside. As a little girl, she was always making up stuff. What started as fibs grew into imaginary playmates and stories shared with her sisters, cousins, and friends. She started writing in her early teens but went to work at age 18 as a machine operator in a local factory. Now retired, and after some college courses, she began her writing career as a freelance content provider. A few years later, she wrote her first novel and fell in love with the process of writing books. 

 

1. Tells us about your writing/ published book(s)

Tough as Marshmallows, my first self-published novel, was released on Amazon in July of 2022. I generally follow the social norms of the 60’s and 70’s and weave suspenseful and dramatic tales where my characters are forced to reckon with the dark side of human nature and humanity. 

Tough as Marshmallows is a sweet story with a dark twist. Marsha moves to Virginia to remodel the house she inherited from grandparents she never knew. A young widow, she struggles to rebuild her life but her stalker has other plans. Can she escape her dark fate or will hers be the next body found? 

 

2. How do you approach starting a new book?

I wrote five books before I considered self-publishing. Each started with a personality type I wanted to explore. I research and develop my main character first, mostly in my head before I start writing. I begin with a general plot but the characters lead the way. It’s much like watching a movie and writing what I see.  

3. Tell me about your current work

Currently, I’m working to publish “Last Ride” which was the first novel I wrote. It’s a coming of age, dramatized fiction, inspired by an unsolved murder. In that story, Vicky’s only thirteen. Seven, when forced to move into her stepfather’s house with a mother she barely knew. Betrayed by a body that develops too soon, she’s trapped in a world she doesn’t understand. She dreams of the boy across the street, but the cop chosen to protect her, is determined to keep them apart.

Finally, what’s the best piece of advice someone has given you about writing, marketing, or just generally about life?

When writing, the beginning starts with the end.
