Rosalyn Briar is a former teacher and is married to her high school sweetheart. Together, they have built a beautiful life and have two fearless daughters. Rosalyn is obsessed with gothic fairy tales, horror movies, dresses, traveling, and reading books. She is the published author of The Crown of Bones and A Sea of Pearls & Leaves, both of which are fairy tale retellings. Rosalyn is also the host of #NovelBuilding, a daily Twitter question with monthly themes for fellow writers to connect. When Rosalyn isn’t writing or reading, you can find her playing dress up with her two princesses or exploring the woods for wildflowers.
1. Tell us about your writing/published books.
I am the author of two published books, The Crown of Bones and A Sea of Pearls & Leaves. They are both dark fantasy fairy tale retellings filled with romance. The sequel to The Crown of Bones will be out in 2021.
2. What is your favourite genre to read?
I jump around but recently I’ve been enjoying dark fantasy novels. I also enjoy thrillers and mysteries.
3.How do you fit writing into your everyday life?
When I’m drafting, I need silence to concentrate. I will wake up very early in the morning before my children do so I can get the words down. Once I’m in editing mode, I can work on my story any time of the day.
4. What do you do when you have writer’s block?
I think it is important to take breaks from writing and to refill the “creative well.” If the words aren’t coming to me, I don’t stress about it. I will go read a book, draw, get outside for a bit, or watch a movie.
5.How do you approach starting a new book?
I like to write down all of my ideas for the plot in a notebook and work on character profiles. Once I have a good idea of the characters, plot, and setting, I outline using Save the Cat Writes a Novel! It is so helpful in creating an engaging story structure.
6. What advice would you give to someone wanting to write their first book?
This might be a little contradictory—but take all writing advice with a grain of salt. You cannot please everyone, so first and foremost write for yourself. You can seek out all the advice in the world about writing, grammar, style, and story structure, but only YOU can tell your unique story. Your first book will be a learning process, and you should enjoy every moment of it!
