Author Q&A with Dr Graham Clingbine

Dr Graham Clingbine: I was born in Hammersmith (London) and at various times lived in Harrow, Plaistow, Eye (Suffolk) and currently in Ilford. He has been married twice and has two daughters, one from each marriage. I have a BSc degree in Biological Science, MSc in Neurobiology and a PhD doctorate for research into brain memory mechanisms. Other than a brief period with a pharmaceutical company, most of my career has been in education and teaching Biology at schools and colleges. Towards the latter part of my career I was for many years a senior lecturer at City& Islington College in north London teaching human physiology, human anatomy and biochemistry. I was the Course Manager of the Medical Access Course overseeing a team of staff and a large cohort of adult students. Over the years I was also very active in home-based network marketing businesses. My personal interests include badminton ( I was our University team captain), and cricket. However, my passion over the years has been fishing and I have pursued exotic and big fish in rivers, lakes and seas not just in the UK but acros Europe in many countries and as far away as the USA.

1. Where’s your favourite place to write?

I have a small office at home. When the door is shut it is a small quiet and enclosed environment which is conducive to writing and thinking about what to write.

2. How do you approach starting a new book?

Initially I have a general think about the contents of the book that I wish to write and about what to include. If it is a story I map out in my mind the general pathway of the story from the beginning right up to the end. I then write down on paper a list of possible chapter headings. This is only a ‘skeleton’ and does not have any details. Once the list of possible chapters is down on paper I rearrange the list to put the chapters in what I consider to be the best and most sensible order. It is only after these steps that I start to write the detailed book content. However, I remain flexible and sometimes rearrange the chapter headings, delete some headings or add others as I go along.

3. What advice would you give to someone wanting to write their first book?

I suggest potential authors should do a lot of preliminary work. Research the market to find out if there is a niche of readers for your book. Find out the difference, advantages and disadvantages between self-publishing (Indie) and using a traditional publisher. In the case of the former choose your publisher carefully – it can be expensive. In the case of the latter it may be a long haul and you may get many rejections. You might need to use a literary book agent to help you. Be aware of the problems of book marketing and promotion as this can also be expensive unless you do your own events such as book signings. Be realistic in your expectations and goal setting.

4. Do you research for your books? If so, what kind of research?

Some books such as stories for children do not rely heavily on research. They depend more on imagination and life experience. For books such as the ones I have written on UFOs then considerable research is required. I will give you some examples: books, magazines, newspaper reports, news reports, television documentaries and a variety of sources on the internet including various websites, You Tube and Wikipedia.

5. Tell me about your current work

I have authored ten books but my most current publication was a book on the alleged crash of a flying saucer at Roswell in New Mexico (USA) in 1947. This event is the most famous UFO case but is shrouded in misinformation and governmental changes of explanations and alleged cover-ups. A crash of some kind occurred for sure on a local ranch – but was it a flying saucer or a crashed weather balloon? There is evidence for the latter but there is also amazing witness testimony and other evidence for the former. My book reviews the real events and the legacy.
